From Borneo to the World
A movement unveiled in Kuching with state backing, UNESCO alignment, and an international architecture established at inception — not improvised after.
In July 2025, Serumpun Sarawak was unveiled. Press coverage was simultaneous and substantive across the major Malaysian outlets — Free Malaysia Today, Business Today, The Borneo Post, DayakDaily, Daily Express, The Star, BorneoTalk, India Outbound — and what each outlet recognised, from the first day of coverage, was that the movement had arrived complete in conception.
The launch chapter is editorially significant for what was already in place at unveiling: state backing, UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy alignment, the architectural framing of three international showcases (Osaka in August, Mulu in October, Kuching finale the following April), and a clear cultural-diplomacy register that placed Sarawak’s thirty-four indigenous communities at the centre of the work.
The press did not need to construct the story. The story arrived constructed.
State Backing and UNESCO Alignment
The launch was carried under the patronage of the Sarawak State Government — with YB Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, as the principal political counterpart — and aligned directly with Kuching’s UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation. Together, the institutional credentials placed the movement on the formal record of state cultural policy from the first day of coverage.
Free Malaysia Today carried the launch under the title Sarawak to showcase its unique cuisine at World Expo 2025 on 10 July 2025; Business Today’s Sarawak’s Culinary Soul Embarks on World Tour (10 July 2025) carried the same framing for the trade press, with the Shahrizal-bylined feature describing the work as “immersive tasting, storytelling and performance”. Together, the two pieces placed Serumpun Sarawak inside both the national and international tourism conversations on the same day.

The Three-Chapter Architecture
What distinguished the Serumpun launch from the conventional Malaysian state-cultural rollout was the architectural completeness on display. By 11 July 2025, DayakDaily had carried the framing — Serumpun Sarawak: Indigenous food heritage to be spotlighted in Mulu and Osaka — and by 12 July 2025, Daily Express had carried the formal three-chapter structure under the title Serumpun Sarawak Ignites A Cultural Gastronomy Journey from Borneo to the World — Unveiling Global Showcases in Osaka August 2025 and Mulu October 2025.
The chapters were named at unveiling. The dates were committed at unveiling. The cultural register was set at unveiling. What followed across the year was the execution of the announced architecture — not its improvisation.
Locally Sauced — The Star Profile
On 13 July 2025, The Star carried Locally Sauced — a feature on Chef James Won bridging ancestral Bornean food traditions with modern sustainability. The piece is the most considered editorial profile of the launch chapter, holding the Serumpun work at the register of cultural-diplomacy practice rather than seasonal launch coverage. The Star’s framing positioned the chef’s wider portfolio — the Krug and Hennessy Ambassade work, the years at Enfin and Shin’Labo — as the foundation that earned Sarawak’s confidence in him as the chef-curator of Serumpun.
Locally Sauced is the editorial cornerstone of the launch chapter and the piece that signals the movement to the wider Malaysian editorial conversation.
The Borneo Press and the International Wire
The Borneo Post carried ‘Serumpun Sarawak’ launched to take indigenous flavours global on 11 July 2025 — the regional Borneo paper’s record of the work, with an explicit indigenous-flavours framing that placed the cultural-diplomacy register front-and-centre. BorneoTalk carried Serumpun Sarawak: From Borneo to the World with the editorial line “where food becomes a vessel for storytelling” — one of the most quoted lines in the entire archive. India Outbound carried Sarawak launches immersive culinary showcase Serumpun Sarawak, placing the movement on the international trade-press radar from the launch.
What the Launch Established
Three things were established at the launch and have held across the wider arc.
The institutional standing. State backing and UNESCO alignment placed the work on the formal record. The Serumpun Sarawak movement was not a chef’s project. It was a state cultural achievement with a chef as curator.
The architecture of three international showcases. Osaka, Mulu, Kuching — three chapters, three registers (international debut, indigenous-rainforest theatre, return-to-state finale). Announced at unveiling. Executed across the year.
The editorial spine. Where food becomes a vessel for storytelling (BorneoTalk); immersive tasting, storytelling and performance (Business Today); bridging ancestral Bornean food traditions with modern sustainability (The Star). Across the launch coverage, the editorial register was consistent: storytelling and conservation as the operating discipline.
The launch did not create the story. The launch revealed the story that had already been built.
Where food becomes a vessel for storytelling.
