Cluster 2 — Kitchen, Atelier, and Tableware

The Atelier Behind the Atelier

A Kuala Lumpur–based luxury kitchen and wardrobe atelier representing Poggenpohl and Ernestomeda — and the chef chosen as its inaugural ambassador.

Luxury kitchen and wardrobe atelier Inaugural Ambassador Poggenpohl · Ernestomeda · Sub-Zero & Wolf Closest to the home

thePlan is the Kuala Lumpur–based luxury kitchen and wardrobe atelier that has, for over a decade, brought European craft into Malaysian homes — Poggenpohl from Germany, Ernestomeda from Italy, and a curated portfolio of complementary European houses. The atelier is not a showroom. It is a workshop for the architectural decisions that make a kitchen function the way the cuisine inside it deserves.

In its inaugural ambassadorship, thePlan appointed Chef James Won — placing the chef alongside the European maisons it represents, and signalling that the atelier’s discipline and the chef’s discipline were considered to belong in the same conversation.

The Inaugural Ambassadorship

The appointment as thePlan’s inaugural Ambassador placed the chef in the atelier’s editorial centre. The reference page at theplan.com.my/about-us/our-ambassador records the appointment. What it signals is consequential: thePlan had not previously named an ambassador. The first one named was the chef whose own kitchen practice the atelier had observed at close quarters — through the years of Brasserie Enfin, Enfin by James Won, Bouchon Enfin, and Shin’Labo.

The maisons represented within thePlan’s portfolio carry their own register. Poggenpohl — the German kitchen-architecture house founded in 1892, whose discipline of modular precision and finishing has defined the European kitchen for over a century. Ernestomeda — the Italian kitchen house whose register sits at the contemporary end of the European spectrum, where craft meets industrial design. Sub-Zero & Wolf — the American maison whose preservation and cooking architecture sits in the highest register of residential precision.

For an inaugural ambassador to be named within an atelier representing this portfolio is not a brand placement. It is a signal that the chef’s editorial register fits the atelier’s portfolio at the level where decisions are made — not at the level where products are shown.

The Workshop Behind the Workshop

Across the chef’s brand portfolio, the thePlan chapter carries a distinctive editorial position. The kitchen-appliance partnerships (Gaggenau) brought the equipment. The tableware partnerships (Mepra) brought what the meal was eaten with. thePlan brought the architectural decisions that come before either — the room itself. The kitchen footprint, the cabinetry brief, the wardrobe register that sits in the residence around the kitchen. thePlan is the maison closest to the home.

What unites thePlan with the chef’s other Cluster 2 chapters is a shared posture: each maison thinks of itself as a workshop, not a showroom. Mepra in Lumezzane. Gaggenau in Lipsheim. Poggenpohl in Herford. Ernestomeda in Pesaro. thePlan is the Malaysian editorial outpost that brings the European workshops together in a single brief.

The Continuing Register

Following the 2025 pivot from operating restaurants to conservation and culinary diplomacy, the thePlan ambassadorship continues — and finds new register in the post-restaurant chapter. The kitchen-architecture register matters whether a chef operates a public room or curates private dining; the residence register matters whether the chef cooks at home or hosts there. The maisons thePlan represents — Poggenpohl, Ernestomeda, Sub-Zero & Wolf — make that continuity possible.

The next chapter of the thePlan ambassadorship sits ahead of this sub-page. Like Mepra, it is one of the brand chapters that did not require the active restaurant to keep its register.

Most ambassadorships honour what a chef does in the room. thePlan honours what comes before the room — the architecture of the decision to build it. The atelier behind the atelier.
